Every bike should be cleaned and maintained regularly. High-quality wheels are basically insensitive and robust, but when driving also exposed to wind and weather. Dust and dirt settle on lubricants and then have the effect of sandpaper. Therefore, these parts in particular should be cleaned and maintained regularly to keep them running smoothly. When cleaning a bike, you can also check your bike for wear and damage at the same time. Many damages may not even be noticed when riding the bike, but can be detected if you examine the bike more closely while cleaning it.

The cleaning is annoying, but basically simple. First remove the lubricants with a degreaser, then wash off dirt and grime with water and a detergent. Once that's done, clean, dry and re-lubricate all moving parts. To clean and sanitize, all you basically need is water, a detergent, oil, lubricant, a bucket, sponges, cloths, various hard brushes, and a cassette scraper. Use the cassette scraper to remove dirt and debris from between the sprockets. Use the hard brush for the cassette. This will ensure that the degreaser gets into the spaces between the sprockets. You should leave the degreaser to work for a while¸ before rinsing it out again with soapy water or a special cleaning agent. You should then clean the rest of the wheel thoroughly from top to bottom with plenty of soapy water and a sponge. Having brushes of different sizes will also help you remove dirt from hard-to-reach places. Always rinse with clean water and then dry the wheel thoroughly.

Maintenance, lubrication, oiling and greasing are a boon to any bike

After cleaning the wheel is the care, lubrication, oiling and greasing. By regularly applying lubricants and care products, you prevent abrasion and wear. However, applying new oil and lubricants to old oils and lubricants is counterproductive. By doing so, you will only create an abrasive paste and damage your bike in the long run. Regularly drip light oil into the joints of the derailleurs. The chains should also be cleaned after rides in the rain, dried and lubricated with suitable lubricant. Open bearings also need to be looked after. Lubricate them best with a special light wheel grease. Bottom brackets and hubs also require regular care if you often ride in the wet. To prevent the seat tube from sticking to the stem, you can use special release agents. Grease also works, but with carbon parts you should definitely use a copper-containing release paste. Problems with the gear shifting can be prevented by putting a few drops of light oil on dry Bowden cables from time to time. The same applies to sluggish brakes, which open again only with difficulty and slowly.

Fast-drying penetrating oils with Teflon particles are particularly recommended for the chain, the circuit and at joints. There are also true "egg-laying lactic acid sows" among the lubricants and care products.
