Bicycle thieves are usually out for a quick prey. If the bike lock of your bike can not be cracked within a few minutes, you can assume that the thief will let go of your bike and choose another potential victim. According to statistics, 95 percent of all bicycle thefts are the work of casual thieves, and only a small percentage are stolen by professional thieves. Price and quality decide when buying a bicycle lock

Bicycle locks are available in all price ranges and quality levels. It is recommended to invest about 10 percent of the value of the wheel in a bicycle lock. Your bike should already be worth that to you. Remember, the longer it takes a thief to pick your bike lock, the greater the risk that someone will witness him stealing it. Whether you use one or two bike locks, always lock your bike to a solid object. Because only if you not only lock your bike, but also chain it to a secure object (e.g. lamppost, fence, bike stand), someone can't simply take your bike away. The object you chain your bike to should also be of a certain height. Over a 1 meter high post, even a heavy Holland bike can be lifted effortlessly. Some lock cylinders can be opened effortlessly by professionals. The only thing thieves need is the right tools. So only use high-quality bicycle locks that have been tested by independent institutes (e.g. Stiftung Warentest) and found to be good. Needless to say, the best bike lock will only protect your bike from theft if you have it with you. In this respect, bicycle locks with a holder have proven their worth. Different bike locks for different uses

The following bicycle locks are available: U-locks, chain locks, folding locks, armored cable locks, spiral locks, cable locks, frame locks. Frame locks are practical and are already installed on the bike as standard by many manufacturers - with the exception of racing bikes. The advantage of a frame lock is that you always have it with you. However, it can also be easily cracked and the wheel itself can also be completed effortlessly carry away. If you need to go to the bakery or shopping, a frame lock is usually sufficient. However, it would be safer to buy another bicycle lock so that you can also connect your bike to a fixed object. As a second lock or if you go shopping for a short time, cable and spiral locks are quite useful. So to speak, the bigger brother of a spiral or cable lock is the armored cable lock. It is more stable and durable than its little brother, can be transported just as well, is also relatively cheap and already offers significantly more deterrence.

Even more secure than armored cable locks are chain locks. They consist of thick hardened chain links. As a rule, the chain links of a bicycle lock are enclosed in a sturdy synthetic fiber casing so as not to damage the paint of the bicycle. The chain, the casing and all the supporting parts of the locking mechanism are made of specially hardened steel. The locking cylinder provides protection against tampering (new German: Picking). Chain locks can be attached to the bike or, if they are long enough, casually slung around the waist while riding. They offer good protection in the event of a high risk of theft and are recommended for securing high-value bicycles. Chain locks are more flexible than U-locks due to their shape and, depending on their length, can also be tied around objects with a large diameter.

Hook locks consist of a U-shaped solid steel shackle and a lock body. The shackle of the bicycle lock is made of a mix of steel. It is hardened on the outside and slightly softer on the inside to provide enough protection against ice spray. U-locks are among the safest bicycle locks ever. When buying, you should make sure that the shackle is long enough so that you can not only disconnect the wheel, but also connect it. High quality U-locks are usually sold with the appropriate brackets that can be attached to the seat post or the frame of the bike. High-quality U-locks can neither be cracked by brute force nor by picking tools and are thus also recommended by independent institutions such as Stiftung Warentest.

The same applies to the bicycle locks described below, the folding locks. Folding locks belong next to the U-locks to the Porschen among the bicycle locks. They have only been on the bicycle accessories market for a relatively short time. A folding lock can be folded like a folding rule and stowed in a supplied bag and attached to the wheel. Folding locks are made of special steel, are available in different lengths and can be used flexibly due to their shape. With a length of 100 cm such a lock weighs already times stately 1.6 kg, offers for it however also a maximum at theft protection.

Renowned manufacturers of bicycle locks such as ABUS, Trelock and Kryptonite have divided their locks into security levels. These are not uniform but basically the greater the security level the safer the bicycle lock. Understandably, the security level increases not only the weight of the lock, but also the price. Although even the best lock can not completely prevent theft, but at least make it extremely difficult. A good bicycle lock is thus always a sensible investment.
