Sits, fits, wobbles and has air. So or similar you could also describe a bicycle pump, although we hope that the air pump on your bike sits and has air, but does not wobble. So that you do not the driving fun and your tire does not run out of air, you should always have a bicycle pump with you.

For on the road, easy-to-stow frame pumps or mini pumps have proven themselves. Frame pumps can be easily attached to the wheel, mini pumps fit into even the smallest bag. For stationary use at home, floor pumps and foot pumps have proven themselves. They are of course larger and therefore take up more space than mini pumps, but on the other hand you can pump up a tire much faster with them than with an average mini pump. As a rule, bicycle pumps lead a rather meager existence in the depths of our bike bags or are attached to the bike in such a way that we hardly notice them. We only become aware of their importance when we have a flat tire because we have run over a piece of broken glass, a nail or some other sharp object. Who in such a situation neither patch kit, spare tube nor a bicycle pump has, must of necessity true to the motto "who loves his bike, which pushes" the way home.

A tire loses air constantly, even without a flat tire

Without a doubt, the bicycle tire is the most stressed component on the bike. Because tires lose air sooner or later, even without a flat tire. The air pressure on the bicycle tire should therefore be checked regularly. Because only if a tire is optimally inflated, it rolls like lubricated. Having a flat tire is usually frustrating, but no reason to immediately go ballistic. However, if your tire loses air more frequently, there may be several reasons for this. Not only thorns, broken glass or other sharp objects can cause a flat tire, also heat or cold can affect the tire.

So wechslt one correctly a bicycle tube

Changing a tube is not difficult, but you should have practiced it before you go on a long bike ride. Because according to Murphy, if you have a flat tire, there's no garage around. It's best to turn your bike upside down before changing the tube. Let the air out of the tire first, then release the brake and quick release to remove the wheel from the front fork and rear frame, respectively.

In your tool bag there should be at least 3 small plastic tire pullers.Put the first tire puller between the casing and the rim and attach the other end to a spoke, then take the second puller and put it in the slot created by the first tire puller. Now pull the second puller clockwise a bit along the rim and attach it to a spoke as well. Take the third tire puller to detach the entire tire casing from the rim. When the bicycle casing has slipped outward over the entire rim, you can pull out the tube between the bicycle casing and the rim. If you have a real flat tire, you should now check the outside and inside of the bicycle shell for foreign objects and damage. What good is a new tube if the bottom of the flat is still stuck in the bike shell and would break the tube again after pumping it up. After checking the jacket and also the rim tape, use the bicycle pump to lightly inflate the new tube. Put the valve through the intended opening of the rim and then pull the tube over the complete rim. Pay attention to the running direction of the tube. Finally, pull the cover back over the tube until it is firmly seated on the rim. If you use the puller, you need a little less force. When the tube has completely disappeared again under the jacket, you can continue to pump it up with the bicycle pump.

Then take the wheel and let them from a low height a few times on the ground to dot, so that the tube is positioned evenly in the jacket.Only when you are quite sure that the tube is properly seated, pump up the tube with the bicycle pump fully.

Mini bicycle pump or cartridge pump?

Even small bicycle pumps for on the road usually have a precise pressure gauge. So you can check the air pressure after changing the tube. When buying a bicycle pump, make sure that the pump has a universal pump head and fits different types of valves (i.e. car valve, Dunlop valve, Presta or French valve). If you don't have a bicycle pump with you because the extra weight bothers you, there's no helping you, because the current models hardly add any weight. There are already lightweight bicycle pumps under 100 g.

For cyclists for whom every second counts, cartridge pumps are recommended. With these bicycle pumps, you can pump up the tire in no time without much effort. However, the cartridges must be replaced regularly. Granted, today's tires are more puncture-proof than in the past, but if you want to be on the safe side, you should never go on a bike tour without a bicycle pump or CO2 cartridge. Undeniably, the classic air pump is still the most reliable helper in a pinch. Because an air pump works everywhere. However, if you want to inflate the tire on a road bike, you have to put in a lot of effort and pump for a long time until you have reached the high tire pressure. To achieve 5 bar pressure with a mini pump, you're already sweating quite a bit. With a cartridge system, you save a lot of energy and power, provided that the gas safely and without loss from the cartridge into the hose.

Both pump systems thus have advantages and disadvantages. Mini bicycle pumps are reliable, inexpensive to purchase, but cost effort and time. CO2 cartridge systems are light and small. You can pump up a tire with them in no time, but sooner or later you have to replace the cartridges with new ones.
