Bicycle child seat order online in children seat shop

Front or rear - that's the question many parents ask themselves when they want to take their offspring safely and comfortably on the bike. While many parents would prefer to have their offspring in view on the bike, most child seats sold are rear-facing models

For young children, front-mounted child bike seats are particularly suitable

Front-mounted child bike seats are especially ideal for young children. Sitting facing the direction of travel, the child can see where he is going and you as a parent can see how your child is doing. You can talk to your child, explain the surroundings and respond to your child's wishes. If the child seat is mounted on the front of the bike, this also has the advantage that you have the space on the carrier free and can carry additional luggage on the back of the bike. If the child seat is mounted so that your child is facing the direction of travel, he or she will generally sit more quietly than if the child seat is placed in front of the handlebars. Looking forward, your offspring can observe other road users and is busy processing the many new impressions. If the child seat is mounted in front of the handlebars, your child does not look in the direction of travel, but to the rear. This has the advantage that you can maintain eye contact with your child, but the disadvantage is that it shifts the center of gravity on the bike and thus also the driving behavior. Basically, you should know that front child seats are only approved for children under a body weight of 15 kg. Since the space between the saddle and handlebars is relatively limited, a child seat here is anyway only for very small children in question. Due to the exposed position, children on front seats are at greater risk in accidents than with a rear-mounted child seat.

Rear child seats are ideal for older children and longer trips

Rear-facing child seats are ideal for transporting larger children and longer trips. They are approved up to a body weight of 22 kg. Thanks to the higher backrest, the child's back and head are better supported. Rear child seats are mounted either directly on or swinging freely above the luggage carrier. The child is strapped into the child seat so that he or she cannot suddenly stand up during the ride or lean far out of the seat. Bicycles with a low step-in in particular would lurch dangerously in the event of such unexpected weight shifts. In the event of a fall, child seats attached to the rear of the bike offer greater protection than front seats. The child is firmly attached to the hard shell seat and cannot fall out even in a fall. It goes without saying that every child - whether transported on a front or rear child seat - should wear a helmet as additional protection on the bike.

The right seat for every bike

If you are unsure which child seat is the best for your bike, you should take your bike with you when buying. Not all child seats can be mounted on every bike. Especially on modern bikes with unusual frame shapes or extremely thick tubes, there could otherwise be unpleasant surprises. On bicycles with "normal" frame geometries, there should be no problems when mounting a child seat.

Stiftung Warentest tests child seats from different manufacturers at regular intervals. Inquire before you buy. Perhaps the model that suits you was tested and found to be good. The safety of your child should be worth it to you. Tip: Never park or park your bike when your child is still in the child seat. Even a still so good side stand can guarantee that their wheel does not tip over because of the additional weight behind.
