Whether mudguards on the bike primarily serve to protect the wheel or the cyclist from dirt and moisture, the spirits argue. We are of the opinion that a fender protects the driver rather than the wheel itself, because the tires and the frame of the wheel also get wet and dirty with fenders, while the cyclist is protected by a fender from the dirt and spray swirled up from the wheel. Fenders must fit the bike like a lid fits the pot.

Whether pre-mounted or post-mounted: The protective effect in the rain unites them all

If the mudguards are already pre-mounted, you do not have to worry as a buyer. When buying a new bike, however, you should make sure that the mudguard is pulled down as far as possible and has a mudguard spoiler. This spoiler is an additional splash guard that prevents shoes from getting wet from the splashing water when riding in the rain. A mudguard extended with spoiler is thus a must for every trekking and city bike.

Mudguards that can be retrofitted to your bike often have martial names like "Shockblade", "Shockboard" and "Dashblade" or new German names like "Topeak", "Dirt Blocker", "Dirt Jack", "Mud Guard", "Crud Catcher" and "Splashboard". What they all have in common is their protective effect in adverse weather conditions.

Adapter brackets allow for quick installation and removal

As far as mounting is concerned, a distinction is made between mudguards that are attached to the bicycle frame with screws, mudguards that are mounted on the suspension fork via an adapter and mudguards for quick mounting without tools. Aftermarket mudguards that are only to be mounted on the bike for a short time (i.e. when it rains or on muddy terrain) should be quick to mount and just as quick to remove. In particular, ambitious mountain bikers who are on the road in all weathers do not want to fiddle with their bike for a long time every time they mount a mudguard. In this respect, mudguards score particularly well, whose adapter system remains almost without a trace on the wheel after disassembly. Thus, the mud flap can be attached and removed again in no time at all. On wide-tire mountain bikes, the mudguard should also be as wide and long as possible to provide the rider with optimum protection against dirt and moisture. After all, mountain bikers don't want to look like chipmunks in the back, and it's not that great riding with sprayed glasses. Weight fetishists can be reassured, mudguards made of plastic are extremely light and therefore hardly fall into the weight.

The motto for the fender: "A lot helps a lot"

When it comes to mud flaps, the motto is "a lot helps a lot". The wider the mudguard, the greater the protective effect. Anyone who has ever ridden in the slipstream behind a cyclist without a rear mudguard in the rain will appreciate rear mudguards on other cyclists as well. The further down pulled the better for oneself and subsequent cyclists. If then this fender also has an additional spoiler, then the protection is as optimal as possible. For road bikes, mudguards made of aluminum or plastic or a mix of both offer an optimal solution. Thanks to their filigree design, they do not interfere with the appearance of elegant racing machines and yet offer comprehensive protection against water splashes and dirt. Thanks to a sophisticated quick-release fastening system, they can be mounted and dismounted quickly and easily as needed.
