Citybikes Online Shop - cheap city bikes for women & men

City bikes, also city bikes or city bikes, must meet many requirements. They should be suitable for everyday use, carry luggage, be as maintenance-free as possible and of course look good. City bikes offer an upright and comfortable riding position. This also explains why city bikes are bought in the majority by women and the 50+ generation.

City as a field of application: the (safety) equipment must fit

Since city bikes - as the name suggests - are mainly used in the city, for the way to work, for shopping or for smaller tours on the weekend, they usually meet the requirements of the road traffic regulations. That is, they are equipped with a dynamo-powered lighting system, have elongated mudguards preferably with splash spoiler, that even the shoes do not get wet in the rain, a luggage rack, reflective spotlights on the pedals and spokes, separately operated front and rear brakes. Comfortable, upright sitting is guaranteed by the handlebars, which are usually strongly drawn towards the rider, with pleasantly grippy fin grips. The handlebar shape of the city bike is therefore not dissimilar to the Dutch bike. The usually low entrance is felt in particular by older drivers and women as pleasant. For further comfort on the city bike usually provide a suspension fork and / or a suspension seatpost.

The intended use determines whether derailleur or hub gear

As a circuit prevails in the city bike more and more the hub gears. However, if you live on a slope, prefer faster speeds and prefer a finer tuning in the gears, a derailleur is recommended. In flat regions, however, an 8-speed hub gear is also sufficient and requires less maintenance. A compromise between a 27-speed derailleur and an 8-speed hub would be an 11-speed freewheel hub. It is sporty even with a lot of luggage, also leaves nothing to be desired on the mountain and has only the disadvantage that it comes significantly more expensive than a cheaper derailleur.

Brake system, luggage solution entry and saddle as further criteria

Good brakes are an absolute must for any city bike. Hydraulic rim brakes offer excellent braking performance even in wet conditions. On some city bikes, the coaster brake integrated into the hub gears is supplemented by a rim brake. Wide tires combined with a suspension seatpost and suspension forks smooth out potholes and curbs effortlessly and ensure great riding fun on city bikes even on bumpy terrain. High-quality city bikes also score points for their luggage solutions. Some manufacturers install luggage carriers with tension straps similar to those on Dutch bikes, while others offer carriers with spring flaps and pannier systems for panniers, thus turning a city bike into a bike suitable for touring. Still other city bike luggage racks have struts, so that even larger panniers and purchases can be fixed effortlessly. Frame-fixed luggage carriers provide additional stability on the city bike. If the load of the city bike is too high, however, the bike becomes somewhat tail-heavy with this luggage solution and thus possibly impairs the driving characteristics. Since city bikes are primarily designed for short distances, they are usually equipped with somewhat softer saddles than is the case, for example, with a road bike or mountain bike. Given the upright riding position on a city bike, a softer saddle feels wonderfully comfortable. If you want to take your kids along on your city bike, make sure your bike allows a child seat to be attached and that there are no annoying cables running along the outside of the seat tube. For seniors, a low step-in is recommended. Since city bikes are often ridden in summer and winter, they should be as low-maintenance as possible. Encapsulated hub gears protect better against rain, dirt and salt than open derailleurs.

What else characterizes a good city bike?

Whether a suspension fork makes sense for you or not depends on where you primarily want to ride. If you want to use your city bike sometimes on natural trails or are tired of being shaken by the cobblestones in the old town, then investing in a suspension fork makes perfect sense. Some city bikes come with additional components: Under-mounted taillights on the luggage rack (protects the taillight against damage when maneuvering or transporting), chain guard (makes the chain less susceptible to maintenance and protects the pants from dirt), brake handles lined with soft plastic (you don't have to grip cold metal when pulling), ergonomically shaped brake handles for a better grip, anti-rust chain, hub dynamos instead of noisy rim dynamos, adjustable suspension on the head tube, 11-speed instead of 7- or 8-speed hub gears, lighting system with LEDs instead of halogen headlights or sparkling bulbs. Admittedly, additional components on the city bike cost extra, of course, but also bring a lot in terms of riding pleasure and safety. Good city bikes are available from just under 500 euros, and good equipment and a lot of performance for a fair price can also be found in the lower price segment. Modern city bikes also look good. Bright colors, unusual designs and retro looks can be found as well as classic white and matte black. Given this brand and model diversity on the city bike market, everyone should find his dream bike.
