The genesis of the bicycle goes back many centuries. In the 19th century, the Karlsruhe forester Drais developed the predecessor of today's bicycle, the draisine. Frustrated by the outcome of a bicycle race, he tinkered with derailleur gears until he was able to change several gears using derailleur gears. Another milestone in the history of the bicycle is the invention of the rubber tube.
