Riding a bike is fun in the truest sense of the word, of course. This applies to all cyclists, but especially for mountain bikers, trail riders and downhillers, because they are even a bit closer to nature. Whether you want to improve your athletic fitness, are looking for that special kick or just want to exercise in the fresh air, then mountain biking is just right for you. How do mountain bikes differ from other bikes? Most obviously in the tires. Mountain bikes have wide lugged tires that provide the grip you need on almost any surface. Whether on narrow trails, over hill and dale, or roots and branches with chunky tires, the mountain biker has the sensation of feeling and experiencing the ground with all its bumps without losing control of the bike, much like a 4-wheel drive car. With a mountain bike you can ride even in the most remote corners of the earth, where no one has ever been before, so to speak, far off the beaten track. Mountain bikers are supported not least by the suspension of the mountain bikes.

Hardtails vs Fullys, 26, 27.5 or 29 inches- who wins?

Full-suspension mountain bikes (fullys) have suspension not only on the front fork, but also on the rear fork. Hardtails are mountain bikes that only have a front fork with suspension. Full suspension mountain bikes are usually more expensive than hardtails but also heavier. Other distinguishing features of a mountain bike include frame height and tire diameter. While touring bikes, city bikes, Dutch bikes and road bikes are usually equipped with 28-inch tires, most mountain bikes have 26-inch tires. There are now also mountain bikes with larger tire diameters. The 27.5-inch tire seems to be gaining acceptance. Even mountain bikes with 29-inch tires are available in stores. While mountain bikes with smaller wheels are more maneuverable and can be accelerated faster, 29-inch wheels offer the advantage that even larger bumps can be overcome more comfortably.

The choice of brakes: rim brake or disc brake?

As far as the brakes are concerned, you will find three different brake types installed on mountain bikes: disc brakes, rim brakes and V-brakes. Disc brakes are recommended for mountain bikers who often drive through water and dirt. Disc brakes grip best in such terrain. They have a larger surface area, thus provide a larger friction surface. They also require less maintenance than rim or V-brakes. However, they are also more expensive and heavier than the other two brake types. Rim brakes are the brakes that are most common. The braking effect is created by friction between two brake pads on the rim of the tire. Moisture has a negative effect on the braking performance of a rim brake. A mountain biker should always be aware of this when riding in the rain or on muddy surfaces, and should adjust his riding style accordingly. A V-brake is actually a cantilever brake manufactured by Shimano and operated via cable. Generally one calls however also the brakes of other manufacturers V-brakes, if they are similarly manufactured. V-brakes have the advantage that they are extremely light and relatively cheap to buy. They have better braking power than rim brakes, but are just as susceptible to moisture.

Important decision criteria: Purpose, budget and biker type

Since mountain bike is not equal to mountain bike, you should be clear before the purchase of such a wheel, where you will use it primarily. Do you want to ride it leisurely around town? Do you need it for your daily commute to work? Or do you want to improve your form and race with it. What's the terrain and surface you'll be riding it on most often? Do you want to ride Donwhill, are you frequently on single trails, gravel roads or paved roads? What do you intend to spend? There are mountain bikers who are willing to dig deep into their pockets, others leave it at the absolute essentials. To which group do you belong? Experience has shown us that you should know in advance exactly what budget you are willing to spend before you start looking for a new mountain bike. But what does the mountain bike that suits you and your specific needs look like? The type of mountain bike depends on what kind of mountain biking you want to do

Mountain Bike Types: Cross-country, downhill, freeride, all-mountain, trials and dirt jump

Roughly speaking, mountain biking can be divided into the following categories: Cross-Country, Downhill, Freeride, All-Mountain, Trial and Dirt-Jump. The most versatile mountain bike is the classic cross-country mountain bike. You can use it on any terrain. Usually equipped with 27 gears, cross-country bikes are the lightest mountain bike types available. The bike market offers full-suspension (fullys) and front-suspension-only (hardtails) mountain bikes, as well as mountain bikes without suspension. The suspension travel is shorter than a downhill model. In general, it can be said that cross-country bikes are suitable for the average mountain biker. So if you're looking for a bike to move far from paved roads, uphill and downhill over forest trails, trails and gravel roads but less over extremely rough terrain, a cross-country mountain bike is the right choice. The downhill and freeride community is becoming increasingly popular. Going down a mountain at full speed, dodging potholes, thundering over rocks, sticks and stones is what many dream of who are looking for the ultimate kick. The best mountain bikes for this way of moving around are full-suspension, stable and quite heavy bikes with comparatively long suspension travel. The relatively large weight compared to other mountain bikes is due to the fact that downhill mountain bikes are exposed to extremely high loads. The weight also does not play such a big role, since downhillers usually only go downhill anyway. Most downhill mountain bikes have disc brakes and relatively few gears. Dowhill and Freeride mountain bikes differ in that freeriders can not only drive down the mountain, but also back up the mountain under their own power. All-Mountain wheels combine features of a downhill bike with those of a cross-country mountain bike. Typically, all-mountain bikes are full-suspension mountain bikes with medium suspension travel. Like cross-country bikes, they have many gears, but are slightly heavier. You can ride them downhill but also back uphill. They cater to a wide range of uses. Trial mountain bikes are suitable for stunts in rough terrain or man-made obstacle courses. Trial mountain bikes are hardtails, have a small frame height, usually no saddle, a rigid fork and few gears. Dirtbikes are used for jumping over mounds. Dirtbikes are mountain bikes with a small frame and relatively light weight and medium suspension. This makes them more maneuverable and the mountain biker has to use less force to perform the jumps. When buying a mountain bike, don't be blinded by the exterior. Just because a mountain bike has great full suspension doesn't mean it's better than one that "only" has a suspension front fork to show for it. If your budget is limited, you have to decide between a mountain bike with all the extras of one price category and a mountain bike with fewer components of a next higher price category. In the middle price category, you can already get quite decent hardtails or downgraded fullys from last season, whose full suspension you may not even need. For example, if you want to ride a lot uphill and downhill, a hardtail or mountain bike without suspension surpasses even the best Fully in terms of driving characteristics on the mountain. Yes, you could even say that as a novice rider you learn many mountain biking techniques literally from scratch better with a hardtail or unsuspended mountain bike than with a full-suspension mountain bike.
