The racing bike was originally designed for purely sporting use (bicycle racing). Unlike a mountain bike, trekking bike or city bike, a racing bike has narrow rims and narrow tires with little to no tread. It is equipped with racing handlebars (bow handlebars) that allow for multiple seating positions. Furthermore, a road bike is characterized by an extremely low weight, as it is deliberately equipped minimalist. Racing bikes have neither mudguards nor a luggage rack. Also, no racing cyclist would think of equipping his racing machine with a side stand. Even on a lighting and bell is rather renounced because of the additional weight.

Gear derailleur, rim brakes and lightweight construction: the characteristics of today's racing bikes

For fine-tuning on hills, all road bikes have derailleurs with two (34-50, 39-53 teeth) or three chainrings (30-39-52 teeth). Mechanical rim brakes still have the preference over disc brakes. When it comes to the saddle height, it is noticeable that it is usually higher than the handlebar height, because the riding position on a road bike is different than on any other type of bike. The frame of a road bike has the shape of a triangle (diamond frame) and is made of either steel, aluminum, carbon or titanium. Each material offers advantages and disadvantages. Ultimately, the choice of material determines the weight and price of the road bike. So you've decided to buy a (new) road bike and want to test ride a few wheels. You know which frame size is right for you. You have studied test reports on gears, brakes and frame material and now want to test ride potential candidates. So that you can make as objective a comparison as possible, we give you below still a few helpful tips on what you should consider before and during such a test ride with a new road bike.

Important tips for buying a road bike

To make sure you return the road bike you are going to test ride, they might want to see your ID or driver's license. Something else you shouldn't forget is your helmet. Many stores prefer to see you wearing a helmet during the test ride. After all, they don't want you to come to any harm with the new and for you still unfamiliar road bike. If you already have a bike with clipless pedals, then you should also have your bike shoes in your luggage. If the bike shoes are something exotic, then you should also bring the clipless pedals themselves. Have them mounted on the new road bike. You should also not forget the right bike clothing. After all, you want to feel comfortable during the test ride and not be distracted by uncomfortable clothing or unfamiliar footwear. You have probably already informed yourself in advance about potentially eligible road bikes and thus know which road bikes and which brands you would like to try out. So the test bikes have the right frame size for you and are also equipped with the handlebars you want. Make sure that the test bikes are properly adjusted: First of all, the saddle of the tested road bikes must be correctly adjusted. This applies to both the saddle height and the saddle angle. The tip of the saddle should form a plane with the back of the saddle. Even tiny incorrect adjustments can have extreme effects on riding comfort. Once you have determined the saddle height, measure it so you can more quickly adjust the saddle height of the other road bikes you are about to test ride. When you sit on the road bike, experienced salespeople can usually tell right away if the handlebar stem is the ideal height or would need to be adjusted higher, lower or at a different angle for you. It is in the seller's best interest that the handlebar stem of the road bike is adjusted to your individual needs, because if you don't feel comfortable, you won't buy the road bike. Have the road bike's tires fully inflated. This is almost more important than the right saddle height. Imagine first trying a high-end carbon road bike with under-inflated tires, and then trying a less expensive road bike with fully inflated tires. Three guesses as to which road bike would run a higher speed. It may already be that many sellers check the tire pressure by briefly pressing on the tire with your fingers and then saying it's okay. Insist that the tire pressure be checked. Then ask the salesperson to briefly explain the gears of the road bike if you are not familiar with them yet. This will also help you determine if the gears are set up correctly. This is followed by the actual test ride with the road bike, which is still unfamiliar to you. You could distinguish the following test scenarios: The classic test ride is the small round in the customer parking lot, the round around the block or the 5 km test ride on the street. The round in the parking lot makes sense because the salesman can check again whether you are sitting correctly on the road bike. However, since you ultimately want to know how the road bike feels at higher speeds, you should extend your test ride. Either take a spin around the block or go for a longer ride. You are not the only cyclist who feels more comfortable on the bike unobserved. This test ride on the road bike would be optimal if it offered different conditions, i.e. good road surface and bad road surface, uphill and downhill sections, headwind, tailwind and crosswind. You may have already fallen in love with the road bike by now. Test out other bikes anyway. Again, make sure you have the right seat height and seat adjustment. Also have the tires inflated on the next bike you want to try. Remember that the gears on the second test bike could also be out of adjustment. You can determine this by having that shifting explained to you again as well. If you're unsure whether you can even compare the different road bikes as a layperson, don't worry.

Pay particular attention to the following:

How does the road bike you are testing accelerate while sitting and standing? How does the road bike perform on bumpy terrain? What does your gut tell you on rough pavement? If you have the opportunity to do a longer test ride with the road bike, ride up a mountain. Why? Quite simply, especially when riding uphill separates the wheat from the chaff. A really good road bike tailored to your personal needs will almost drive itself up the mountain, even if you should shift times. With a "ferner liefen" road bike you will always be looking for the right gear.
