For longer trips with and without luggage, a trekking bike is recommended. If you want to cycle through the most beautiful cycling regions of Germany and Europe, you need a puncture-proof bike that, in addition to good gears and grippy brakes, should also be equipped with adequate lighting and a sturdy luggage rack. How much is the investment in such a bike? For about 400-500 euros you get an all-round bike of acceptable quality. From 750 euros, you can expect a little more in terms of durability and equipment. Basic questions before buying a trekking bike at velondo.com

Before you consider buying a trekking bike, you should consider to which group of cyclists you would count yourself. Do you drive rather sporty ambitious or do you prefer a leisurely way of driving? Are you drawn to the mountains or do you prefer to use your new trekking bike on the flat? Do you also want to use the bike for commuting to work or are you more of a "fair weather cyclist"? The answer to these questions has a decisive influence on the choice of a trekking bike suitable for your personal needs. Then you should inform yourself in trade magazines, test reports, forums or our hotline, which type of trekking bike would be suitable for you. Only then should you answer the question of your budget.

Frame material, suspension, gears depending on driving style and type; features of the trekking bike at a glance

As a frame material, you can often find aluminum or steel in trekking bikes. Steel frames are usually more expensive and feel stiffer and harder from the driving experience. To cushion this stiffness, many trekking bikes are equipped with a suspension fork. The suspension can be blocked or released on some trekking bikes via a switch, depending on the terrain on which you are currently riding. On bumpy roads, cobblestones and bumpy surfaces, you can turn on the suspension and block it again on top level roads. Depending on which group of cyclists you would classify yourself (ambitious, sporty, leisurely) depends on the choice of gears. For a leisurely ride on a trekking bike on the flat and leisurely bike rides along Germany's river courses, an 8- or 9-speed hub gear is quite sufficient. You can shift gears with one hand and have a coaster brake. However, if you are planning longer bike tours and want to climb mountains with your trekking bike, then we recommend a derailleur with at least 24 gears. So you have the fine tuning that you need when driving uphill. You should also keep in mind that longer tours usually also mean an increased amount of luggage. A trekking bike with derailleur gears and - should you frequently be in the mountains - with a large sprocket (30 to 34 teeth), guarantee effortless climbing even on steep climbs with luggage and headwind. The carrier should be stable, after all, it must carry your luggage. Luggage carriers with spring flaps are more suitable for everyday use than those without. Make sure that the carrier of your trekking bike has downward struts to provide optimal support for your panniers. Poorly fastened luggage is immediately noticeable negatively and reduces the riding pleasure. It is advantageous if the rear reflector attached to the luggage rack of your trekking bike is protected by some kind of roll bar. If you often have to carry your trekking bike to the cellar, for example, it can happen that you bump into something and damage the rear light or the rear reflector. Roll bars prevent this from happening. The saddle of your trekking bike should not be too soft. Rather, choose a slightly firmer model. Your backside will thank you. If already suspension, then a suspended seatpost. In this area, however, there are significant price and quality differences. Useful is also a small saddle bag attached to the saddle. There, small items such as patch kit and tools can be easily accommodated. Let's move on to the handlebars. Make sure that the handlebars of your trekking bike can be easily adjusted in height. The grips can be ergonomically shaped to prevent your hands from falling asleep. Shift and brake levers should be easily accessible.

For safety's sake: Braking system & lighting

Trekking bikes designed for the city or short trips are usually equipped with drum or roller brakes. Trekking bikes for longer trips with luggage, however, usually have rim brakes. If you're willing to dig a little deeper into your wallet, we recommend hydraulic brakes. They also provide the necessary bite in wet conditions. You should not skimp on the lighting system of a high-quality trekking bike. Long-lasting LED lamps with a hub dynamo that emit a very bright light are first-class. Advantage of a hub dynamo over a classic dynamo is that you hardly feel it when the lamp is on. At this point, it should be mentioned that according to the Highway Code, a bicycle is not roadworthy if it is equipped with a battery-powered lamp. So, actually, every bike that participates in road traffic should be equipped with a lamp powered by a dynamo of whatever type. However, the lack of a dynamo is tolerated by the police.

Don't get out of step with the right pedals

In the ideal case, the pedals of your trekking bike should be made of metal with a cushioning and non-slip plastic pad. Ambitious cyclists also like to choose combination pedals, on the one hand they have a click system (Klickies), into which special cycling shoes are clicked and on the other hand a normal plastic pad for normal road shoes. A plus in safety are pedals with reflectors. So you are better seen in the dark and poor visibility by other road users.

28 inch as standard wheels for the trekking bike

Let's move on to the tires of a trekking bike. The 28-inch tires of many manufacturers already offer good puncture protection. Who is willing to spend a little more and also accepts an increase in weight of about 150 grams per coat, can choose a tire with a protective belt made of rubber. For those who ride a lot far from paved roads, we recommend "semislicks". The tread center of these tires is smooth. This guarantees low rolling resistance on paved roads. On the side of the tire are short lugs, so that you always have a good grip with these tires even on unpaved terrain. As for the spokes, eyeleted models have proven themselves. These spokes stand in small ring eyelets and are therefore more stable. The probability of driving an "eight" into the trekking bike are less with eyeleted spokes. Small reflectors can also be attached to the spokes of the trekking bike. They are light as a feather and mean no more weight but more safety. To prevent the tires from throwing dirt and moisture to the rear, trekking bikes should be equipped with mudguards. By the way, your shoes will stay drier if the mudguard on the front wheel is as long as possible and has an additional spoiler. Remember, dry footwear is important because you usually only have one pair of cycling shoes on a bike tour. Your trekking bike should still have at least one pair of mounting eyelets for a bottle cage. On some bikes, you can even attach 2 water bottles. Since you should also always have a bike lock with you on a bike tour, you can also use the device for the second water bottle to attach a bike lock.
