Different types of e-bikes:

Although colloquially referred to as an "e-bike", most electronic bicycles are classified as pedelecs. Like the e-bike, the Pedelec is powered by an electric motor. But there is an important difference. This one is simply explained:

Pedelec

As the name suggests, the rider must always drive the Pedelec (“Pedal Electric Bicycle”) using the pedals. i.e. Despite the electric motor, the rider has to pedal to get the bike going. The electric motor has a supportive effect - either on long stretches in a straight line or on climbs that would only be difficult to overcome without a motor.

The power of the electric motor on Pedelecs is usually around 250 watts. As a rule, several settings are possible to find the optimal and individual level of support. With Pedelecs, the rider's cadence or the force transmitted to the pedals is usually used as the basis for finding the right setting.

The great thing is: You don't need a driver's license or insurance number for Pedelecs and you don't have to wear a helmet for Pedelecs up to 25 km/h. Nevertheless: safety comes first; wearing a helmet is therefore definitely recommended!

E-bike

In contrast to the Pedelec, the e-bike accelerates without having to press the pedals.

Once the powerful motor is switched on, it automatically drives the bike. Up to 500 watts of motor power are permitted for this type of bicycle.

Attention: Since the motor starts the bike without any assistance, this type of e-bike has been classified by the law as a moped. This means: in traffic you need a moped driving license to drive such an e-bike. An insurance license plate is also required. A helmet is mandatory.

The e-bike – technically illuminated

The way an electric bike works is based on a combination of electrical and mechanical technology. Here is a brief overview:

1. Electric motor:

The heart of an e-bike is the electric motor. This can be mounted in different positions on the bike, most commonly on the pedal crank (mid-motor), in the rear wheel (hub motor) or in the front wheel (hub motor). The electric motor generates the power that gives the biker additional thrust when pedaling.

2. Battery:

The motor uses the energy provided by the battery. This usually uses lithium-ion technology. The capacity of the battery determines the range of the e-bike. The battery can be attached to the bicycle frame or, more conveniently, removable. The removable version offers several advantages: The battery is easy to charge. In winter, depending on where the bike is stored, it can be removed, which can protect it from cold damage. In addition, an additional battery (for long distances) can be used without any problems.

3. Control electronics:

The control electronics are the brains of the e-bike. It regulates the engine's power output, taking current driving conditions into account. The biker uses this to regulate how much additional power he needs by selecting the support levels. The control electronics also monitor the speed and measure the rider's pedaling power.

4. Sensory:

Various sensors are integrated into the e-bike to collect information and adjust motor performance. The most important sensors are:

Torque sensor, this measures the force exerted by the driver on the pedals.
Speed sensor. This determines the speed of the bike.
Cadence sensor: It monitors the pedal revolutions.

5. Display and control unit:

The e-bike has a display that shows the rider information such as speed, remaining battery life and selected support level. With a control unit, which is usually attached to the handlebars, the driver can adjust the settings and activate or deactivate the motor.

If you have already decided which type of e-bike is ideal for you, there is still an important question to ask, namely the e-bike motors and batteries.

Let's take a closer look at this:

1. Performance

The engine power of your e-bike determines how much support you receive while riding and how fast you can travel with your e-bike. Of course, the deciding factor here is which e-bike variant you choose. It's clear: powerful electric motors are recommended for mountain bikes so that they don't let you down even on steep mountains. The most powerful motor has up to 500 watts and a torque of 75 Nm. But you are also well positioned with a performance of 250 watts and 48 Nm torque.

2. Battery charging time

There are big differences in battery charging time. From a quick 2 hours to a long 9 hours, everything can be found here.

Batteries that take longer to charge should ideally be able to be removed from the bike. Then you can simply charge it overnight using a normal socket. But there are also e-bike variants with a permanently installed e-battery. In this case, you need a place for your bike near a power outlet.

3. Range

How far do you want to ride your bike on average? This question is particularly important for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. Most of these e-bike models have a range of 80 km. That's pretty neat. But there are also models that can cover over 120 km with electronic support. The range obviously depends on the battery. The longer this power lasts without having to be recharged, the further you can ride your e-bike.

Most e-bike batteries are lithium-ion batteries. Experience has shown that these batteries are robust and even if the e-bike is not used for a while, their charge will last for a long time.

Tip: If your battery power isn't enough on a trip, there are numerous e-bike charging stations that will give your battery new power even on the go.

Alternatively, you can of course also buy a second battery and thereby increase your range.

4. Weight

Also not to be despised: the weight of your bike. Modern e-bikes rely on an ultra-light construction; Frame and other components are made of lightweight aluminum. Of course, the battery and motor add weight. But e-bikes have also developed in this respect: common e-bikes weigh between 22 and 24 kg. Racing bikes can also be found as lightweight models that can sometimes weigh less than 10 kg.
